NEET UG 2027: 25 NCERT Biology Changes, Old vs New (Fact-Checked)

Gurukripa Admin | October 22, 2026

NEET UG 2027 aspirants are studying from the NCERT Biology Reprint 2026-27 editions for Classes 11 and 12. These are corrected reprints, not new textbooks. We checked 25 widely shared “old vs new NCERT” changes against NCERT’s official PDFs: 12 are confirmed in the current text, 2 are reported by other published comparisons, 5 are diagram changes to check in the printed figure, 5 could not be traced, and 1 is not in the book at all.

Key Takeaways

  • No new Biology textbook for 2026-27. The official Class 11 and Class 12 Biology PDFs on ncert.nic.in are marked “Reprint 2026-27”.
  • 12 of 25 reported changes are confirmed in the current NCERT text, including Theodore Schwann’s nationality, hydrogen at 9.5% in Table 9.1, and the universe’s age of 13.8 billion years.
  • One popular claim is wrong. NCERT still prints Ernst Mayr’s death year as 2004.
  • Diagram changes need the printed book. Five changes concern figures (EcoRI, pBR322, morphine, radicle, ATP synthase) that you must check visually.
  • A textbook change is not a syllabus change. Follow the NEET UG syllabus as officially notified for 2027.

Is There a New NCERT Biology Book for NEET UG 2027?

No. The NCERT Biology textbooks for Classes 11 and 12 available on the official NCERT textbook portal are marked “Reprint 2026-27”. They keep the same chapters as the rationalised books, with factual corrections, wording edits and redrawn figures.

Corrections build up across reprints. Some “new” changes shared online first appeared in the 2024-25 or 2025-26 reprints. That is why the safest rule is simple: study from the latest reprint, not from a list.

How We Checked These 25 Changes

On October 21, 2026, our Biology faculty compared each of the 25 widely shared changes with the official NCERT PDFs marked Reprint 2026-27. Every item below carries one of five status labels:

Class 11 Biology: 16 Changes Explained

1. Ernst Mayr’s Death Year (Not Reflected)

  • Reported: NCERT corrected Mayr’s death year from 2004 to 2005.
  • Current NCERT: The Reprint 2026-27 box on Ernst Mayr still gives his life span as 1904 to 2004.
  • What to do: Do not change your notes on the strength of a list. Mayr actually died in 2005, but NEET questions are framed on NCERT, and this line has not changed.

2. Taxonomic Categories (Confirmed)

  • Current NCERT: The section on taxonomic categories now stresses that these groups are “distinct biological entities and not merely morphological aggregates.”
  • Revise: Know the hierarchy from species to kingdom and why each rank is a real biological unit, not just a group that looks alike.

3. A Scientist’s Full Name (Not Traced)

  • The reported change does not name the scientist. In the current Biological Classification chapter, most scientists still appear with initials (for example, R.H. Whittaker).
  • Revise: Learn scientist names exactly as printed in your current reprint.

4. A Removed Paragraph (Not Traced)

  • The reported change does not identify the page or topic, so it cannot be verified.
  • Revise: If your coaching notes contain a line you cannot find in the current reprint, mark it “check” rather than deleting it outright.

5. Vegetative Reproduction in Fungi (Confirmed)

  • Current NCERT: Fungi reproduce vegetatively by fragmentation, fission and budding. Spore formation is described separately as asexual reproduction.
  • Revise: Keep the line clear between vegetative reproduction and spore-based asexual reproduction.

6. Theodore Schwann: German Zoologist (Confirmed)

  • Old: Schwann was described as a British zoologist.
  • Current NCERT: Schwann (1839) is described as a German zoologist.
  • Note: Some lists call him a “geologist”. That is a transcription error. Schleiden remains a German botanist.

7. Cytoplasm Is “Semi-Fluid” (Confirmed)

  • Current NCERT: Cytoplasm is a semi-fluid matrix in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
  • Revise: Expect statement-based MCQs that swap “fluid” and “semi-fluid”.

8. Hydrogen in the Human Body: 9.5% (Confirmed)

  • Old: Table 9.1 gave hydrogen as 0.5% of human body weight.
  • Current NCERT: Hydrogen is 9.5% of human body weight and 0.14% of the earth’s crust (Biomolecules, Reprint 2026-27).
  • Revise: Memorise the full table row by row: carbon 18.5, oxygen 65.0, nitrogen 3.3 (human body).

9. Spindle Fibres (Confirmed)

  • Current NCERT: The metaphase description in Cell Cycle and Cell Division has no repeated statement about spindle fibres.
  • Revise: Spindle fibres attach to kinetochores and align chromosomes on the metaphase plate. The concept is unchanged.

10. “Only” Removed from a Food-Formation Statement (Not Traced)

  • We could not find the reported sentence in the Biological Classification chapter.
  • Revise: Treat absolute words such as “only”, “all” and “never” as traps in NEET statements.

11. Protons in ATP Synthesis: 2H+ to 4H+ (Check Figure)

  • Reported: Other published NCERT comparisons state that the ATP synthase diagram now shows 4 hydrogen ions instead of 2.
  • Revise: Check the chemiosmosis figure in your printed Photosynthesis chapter and redraw it in your notes.

12. IRV and ERV Definitions (Confirmed)

  • Current NCERT: Inspiratory Reserve Volume is what a person can inspire by forcible inspiration (2,500 to 3,000 mL). Expiratory Reserve Volume is what a person can expire by forcible expiration (1,000 to 1,100 mL).
  • Revise: The values are unchanged. Conceptually, both are volumes beyond the tidal volume, so capacity formulas (IC = TV + IRV, EC = TV + ERV) still apply.

13. ECG is an Electrocardiogram (Confirmed)

  • Current NCERT: The section is titled Electrocardiogram (ECG). The machine used to record it is the electro-cardiograph.
  • Revise: The “-gram” is the graph (record); the “-graph” is the instrument.

14. Euglena Is a Protist (Confirmed)

  • Current NCERT: In Locomotion and Movement, flagellar movement helps in locomotion of protists like Euglena.
  • Revise: Link this with Biological Classification, where euglenoids are photosynthetic in sunlight but behave like heterotrophs without it.

15. Hyoid Bone (Confirmed)

  • Current NCERT: The hyoid is described as a single U-shaped bone at the base of the buccal cavity, with no statement that it is part of the skull.
  • Revise: The skull still totals 22 bones (8 cranial, 14 facial).

16. Adrenal Glands Above the Kidneys (Confirmed)

  • Current NCERT: The body has one pair of adrenal glands, one above each kidney.
  • Revise: This position explains the alternative name, suprarenal glands.

Class 12 Biology: 9 Changes Explained

17. Reproduction Unit Introduction (Not Traced)

  • The reported removal of a reference to “general principles” could not be located.
  • Revise: Follow the chapter list in your current reprint for the Reproduction unit.

18. Maize Tassels Wording (Not Traced)

  • Old: In the wind pollination section, the corn cob’s tassels were described as stigma and style waving in the wind.
  • Reported: The wording now refers to “ears”. We could not confirm the new line.
  • Revise: Botanically, the silky threads on the maize ear are the styles and stigmas, while the tassel is the male inflorescence. Read the exact line in your reprint.

19. Radicle Label in the Embryo Diagram (Check Figure)

  • Reported: A radicle label has been added to the dicot embryo figure.
  • Revise: Label radicle, plumule, cotyledons and hypocotyl from memory.

20. Milk Is “Expressed” (Reported)

  • Old: Milk was described as sucked out through the lactiferous duct.
  • Reported new wording: Milk is expressed out.
  • Revise: Connect the mammary ducts, ampulla and lactiferous duct in the correct order.

21. “Ovum” Becomes “Secondary Oocyte” (Reported)

  • Reported: The ovary section figure now labels the released cell a secondary oocyte, not an ovum.
  • Current NCERT text: The fertilisation section explains that sperm contact triggers completion of the meiotic division of the secondary oocyte.
  • Revise: The cell released at ovulation is the secondary oocyte. Meiosis II completes only after a sperm makes contact. This is one of the highest-value corrections for NEET.

22. Age of the Universe: 13.8 Billion Years (Confirmed)

  • Old: The universe was described as almost 20 billion years old.
  • Current NCERT: The Evolution chapter now states the universe is almost 13.8 billion years old (Evolution, Reprint 2026-27).
  • Revise: Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago. Life appeared about 500 million years after that.

23. Morphine Structure (Check Figure)

  • Reported: An OH (hydroxyl) group has been added to the morphine structure.
  • Where it is: Figure 7.7, Human Health and Disease (Drugs and Alcohol Abuse), not the biotechnology chapters.
  • Revise: Heroin is diacetylmorphine, made by acetylation of morphine.

24. EcoRI Cut-Site Arrow (Check Figure)

  • Reported: The arrow marking where EcoRI cuts has been corrected.
  • Current NCERT text: EcoRI recognises the palindrome 5’ GAATTC 3’ and cuts between the same two bases on both strands, leaving sticky ends.
  • Revise: EcoRI cuts between G and A, giving 5’ overhangs.

25. pBR322 Plasmid Diagram (Check Figure)

  • Reported: A label in the pBR322 figure was changed.
  • Current NCERT text: Foreign DNA is ligated at the BamH I site in the tetracycline resistance gene. Recombinants grow on ampicillin but not on tetracycline.
  • Revise: Know ori, rop, ampR, tetR and all seven restriction sites, and check the label positions in your printed Figure 9.4.

Does an NCERT Change Alter the NEET UG 2027 Syllabus?

No. Corrections in an NCERT reprint do not add or remove NEET topics. The syllabus is whatever is officially notified for NEET UG 2027. Until it is notified, treat the current syllabus as your reference and watch official channels.

Exam format is a separate question. For the latest on exam mode, read our NEET 2027 CBT mode update.

How to Update Your NCERT Biology Notes for NEET UG 2027

  1. Check your reprint year. Look at the bottom of any page of your book. If it does not say Reprint 2026-27, download the free chapter PDFs from ncert.nic.in.
  2. Correct, do not rewrite. Add the 12 confirmed changes to your existing notes with a different coloured pen.
  3. Redraw five figures. ATP synthase, dicot embryo, morphine, EcoRI and pBR322. Diagram-based MCQs reward exact labels.
  4. Mark, do not memorise, uncertain items. For anything labelled “Not traced”, read the actual NCERT line before you learn it.
  5. Test each change. Solve chapter-wise MCQs after updating, using a timed setup such as the digital test series at Gurukripa Online.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is there a new NCERT Biology book for NEET UG 2027?

No. The official NCERT Biology PDFs for Classes 11 and 12 are marked Reprint 2026-27. They are corrected reprints of the existing rationalised textbooks, with the same chapters, plus factual corrections, wording edits and some redrawn figures.

2. How many NCERT Biology changes are confirmed for NEET UG 2027?

Of 25 widely shared changes, 12 are confirmed in the current NCERT Reprint 2026-27 text. Two more are reported by other published comparisons, five are diagram changes to check in the printed book, five could not be traced, and one is not reflected.

3. Did NCERT change Ernst Mayr’s death year to 2005?

No. The current NCERT Class 11 Biology text still gives Ernst Mayr’s life span as 1904 to 2004. He actually died in 2005, but the NCERT line has not been corrected in Reprint 2026-27.

4. What is the age of the universe according to the new NCERT?

The Class 12 Evolution chapter in Reprint 2026-27 states that the universe is almost 13.8 billion years old. Older editions said almost 20 billion years. Earth is described as about 4.5 billion years old.

5. What is the percentage of hydrogen in the human body in NCERT Table 9.1?

Hydrogen is 9.5% of human body weight in Table 9.1 of the Class 11 Biomolecules chapter (Reprint 2026-27). Older editions printed 0.5%. Hydrogen in the earth’s crust remains 0.14%.

6. Is the cell released at ovulation an ovum or a secondary oocyte?

It is a secondary oocyte. The second meiotic division completes only when a sperm contacts it, producing the ovum (ootid) and a second polar body. Updated NCERT figures label the released cell as a secondary oocyte.

7. Was Theodore Schwann British or German?

German. The current NCERT Class 11 chapter Cell: The Unit of Life describes Theodore Schwann (1839) as a German zoologist. Older editions called him British. Matthias Schleiden is described as a German botanist.

8. Will these NCERT changes be asked in NEET UG 2027?

There is no guarantee. A correction in NCERT does not mean a question will be set on it. However, NEET Biology is closely based on NCERT lines, tables and diagrams, so studying from the latest reprint protects you from marking an outdated answer.

9. Do I need to buy a new NCERT Biology book for NEET 2027?

Not necessarily. Check the reprint year printed at the bottom of the pages. If your copy is older, download the free Reprint 2026-27 chapter PDFs from ncert.nic.in and update your notes from them.

Final Takeaway

NEET UG 2027 Biology is still built on the same NCERT books, now in their Reprint 2026-27 form. Update your notes with the 12 confirmed changes, redraw the five changed diagrams, ignore the Ernst Mayr myth, and read the actual NCERT line before memorising anything a list tells you.
